Accommodation

Accomodation

Finding accommodation in Luxembourg can be somewhat of a challenge,
depending on where you want to live and your budget.

There is an abundance of both houses and apartments to rent but whereas house
rental prices have fallen in the last couple of years, prices of apartment rental have seen an increase of 3.1% in the last year alone.

Buying has also enjoyed a surge in recent years, which is reflected in the large increase of property prices, particularly in and around Luxembourg City (making Luxembourg the second most expensive city in Europe, after London), but again house prices are at present rather stagnant, with apartment prices still rising at a slower rate.

Saying that, there are still ways to find a nice, reasonably-priced place to live, especially if you don’t mind commuting a bit and many people have now chosen to move across the border into one of the neighbouring countries, where you can usually find cheaper and larger properties.

Whether buying or renting an apartment it is most likely that you will have to pay a monthly service charge on top of the rental/mortgage price. This normally covers things like cleaning and maintenance of the communal areas, rubbish collection, heating, hot water and sometimes electricity. It is important to find out exactly what the service charge covers and also the average annual increase.
