Driving licence

Whether or not you can retain your old driving licence depends primarily on your nationality and when it was issued.

EU nationals

There is currently no common EU driving licence in place, however a 'community model' driving licence has been introduced by the EU, which allows driving licences from other EU countries to be easily recognised and accepted by the host country. As a resident of Luxembourg you do not have to give up your existing licence but it is possible that additional data may be added to your licence to fulfil administrative requirements.

Any driving licence issued before 1996 you does not have to be exchanged it for a 'community model' driving licence and will remain valid until its expiry date.

In case of theft and loss of your licence, you should immediately contact the Driver’s Licence Office at the Transport Ministry (Ministère des Transports), where they will issue you with a new Luxembourg licence.

Non-European nationals

It is important to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local motoring association before you start driving in Luxembourg, particularly if you wish to hire a car as soon as you arrive. Please ensure it is carried alongside your normal driving licence.

You are entitled to drive on your original licence for six months but you must apply for a Luxembourg licence within twelve months of arrival. You need to go to the Ministry of Transport (Ministère des Transports) with the following documentation:

  • health certificate from your doctor in Luxembourg, which is no more than three months old;
  • affidavit from your Embassy;
  • certified copy of the front and back of your current driver's licence, (i this is not in French, German or English you must have it legally translated before applying);
  • certificate of residency, less than one month old;
  • passport picture (45/35mm);
  • your police record of good conduct;
  • driver’s licence request form (no. 1450059; you can download this from www.snct.lu);
  • tax stamp, available from the Driver’s Licence Office.
