Dependency insurance

Introduced in 1999 this insurance is covered solely by the employee at a contribution rate of 1.40% of salary. There is also an allocation of some €140 million euros from the State.

The insurance provides protection in the event of 'risk to life' by reimbursing fees paid for help provided to a dependent person living at home or in a nursing/care home.

A person is considered to be dependent when 'owing to a physical or mental illness or a deficiency he/she has a regular need for assistance in the essential acts of life, e.g. bodily hygiene, nutrition and mobility'.
