A research and teaching (PhD level) position is available within the Financial Analysis Service led by Professor Marie Lambert, in the area of Corporate Finance. This research group is affiliated to HEC Research, the research unit of HEC Liège in the strategic field of ‘Asset and Risk Management’.

The successful candidate will work on ongoing (and future) research projects in Private Equity and Venture Capital and Corporate Finance in general. The current projects are connected (but not limited) to:

· the impact of dry powder on performance and investment behavior of private equity funds;

· the definition of appropriate performance measures for the private equity investments;

· applied research questions sponsored by the industry.

The successful candidate will also have teaching duties related to basic and advanced courses in Corporate Finance and Financial Valuation as well as alternative investment funds. The teaching duties will be very limited during the first year of contract. The duties include administrative work related to the organization of the courses, practical sessions, assignments and exams.

Professor Lambert’s team of researchers is comprised of 4 PhD students in Finance working on news analytics, hedge funds, smart beta and portfolio management as well as corporate finance (private equity). The candidate is expected to enroll in the management track of HEC Liège’s doctoral program in economics and management. The management track is organized by the Thematic Doctoral School in Management Sciences, set up jointly by the ULiège (HEC Liège), the ULB (Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management), and the UMONS (Warocqué School of Business and Economics) and offers a high level training, in accordance with the most demanding international standards, combining mastery of theories and methods, innovation, critical thinking, group work and personal approach.

1. Job description:

· Research duties:

o The successful candidate will work on applied (industry-sponsored) and fundamental research projects in Corporate Finance (see above);

o The successful candidate will prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of finance (PhD in management). As a full-time PhD Student at HEC Liège, you will be affiliated to the research domain “Asset and Risk Management” . The candidate will attend a doctoral program in economics and management offered by HEC Liège in collaboration with Belgian partner universities.

· Teaching duties:

o The successful candidate will be in charge of practical sessions in basic and Advanced Courses in Corporate Finance as well as alternative investment funds for an estimated amount of 20 hours;

o The successful candidate will provide assistance for the courses (remediation and business hours for students, group composition, group project monitoring, preparation and grading of exams…)

o Teaching duties will be limited the first year but will be an integrative part of the teaching and research mandate.

· The successful candidate will be a member of the research group led by Prof. Marie Lambert. He/she will be involved into the administrative and scientific life of the research group.

 

2. Your profile:

· You have a master degree (120 credits) in economics, management or applied mathematics with a specialization in finance by the time you will be hired (i.e. by August-October 2019);

· You can demonstrate:

o Research and teaching skills/interests

o Programming skills

o Data management skills

o Econometrics skills

o Strong writing and oral communication skills;

· You are ready to collaborate with the financial industry on applied research projects;

· Languages: english and french. The knowledge of french is considered as an asset.

3. Contract:

The research and teaching assistant will be hired on a doctoral grant (2100 euros net salary including social security allowance) for an initial period of 6 months starting in August 2019 (at the latest October 2019).

The successful candidate will then be offered a teaching and research assistant mandate up to the end of September 2020.

Upon a positive evaluation of the candidate at the end of the first year, he or she will be offered a teaching and research assistant mandate of 2 years (as of 1st October 2020), renewable 3 times.
