Job description:PostDoc (f/m/d) Flexibilization of pyrometallurgical recycling processes
As member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,400 people. The Center's focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health and matter.
The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) pursues the objective of developing innovative technologies for the economy so that mineral and metalliferous raw materials can be made available and used more efficiently and recycled in an environmentally friendly manner
The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology invites applications as
PostDoc (f/m/d) Flexibilization of pyrometallurgical recycling processes.
The position will be available from 1st June 2021. The employment contract is limited till 31st December 2023.
Tasks:
In the context of the energy transition, the future energy supply mix will strongly vary. The possibilities of using such a supply in the energy intensive processes of the recycling industry will be investigated exemplarily by means of computer simulations of metallurgical processes and process chains in copper metallurgy.
Based on the exergetic analysis of alternative scenarios, flexibility options in the (pyrometallurgical) recycling of complex composed secondary raw materials will first be elaborated. Selected process chains will be simulated in a suitable digital platform (such as HSC). This allows for determining the possibilities for flexibilization of the energy demand, the secondary raw materials used, and the purity and composition of the products.
For this purpose, the usual, mostly static process models have to be transformed into dynamic ones. The effects of both abrupt and continuous changes in energy supply, feed characteristics and process conditions are to be captured. In this way, technological weak points and potentials of a future circular economy can be identified and quantified.
Requirements:
#
Ability to work scientifically, typically demonstrated by a very good PhD degree
#
A full thermodynamic understanding of pyrometallurgical processes, ideally with an in-depth understanding of copper metallurgy
#
Understanding of the circular economy
#
Programming skills
#
Ideally knowledge in a simulation software for metallurgical processes (e.g. HSC)
#
Ability and willingness for transdisciplinary cooperation
We offer:
# A vibrant research community in an open, diverse, and international work environment# Scientific excellence and extensive professional networking opportunities# Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement TVöD-Bund# 30 Vacation Days per year# Company pension scheme (VBL)# A good work/life balance for which we offer assistance in the form of:
#
possibility to work part-time
#
flexible working hours
#
in-house health management
Kindly submit your completed application (including cover letter, CV, diplomas/transcripts, etc.) only via our Online-application-system.
