Apply for MSCA Postodctoral Fellowships with Wroclaw Medical University.

Wroclaw Medical University is looking for candidates for the MSCA Post- doctoral Fellowships 2021, which are due to become available as part of the Horizon Europe Programme. At this stage, we invite experienced researchers with a PhD (up to 8 years research experience after PhD), who are willing to come to Poland for 2 years, to send us an expression of interest. Applicants maynot have resided, worked, or studied in Poland for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the proposed call deadline (September 15, 2021).

We are located in south west Poland, where you are never far away from all kinds of attractions. The region is just as good for the city types as for the nature-loving explorers. About 1 hour drive from various mountain ranges and with goregous architecture, the City of Wroclaw is a perfect place for a longer stay in Poland. The rents are reasonable and the local people are very friendly.

Supervisor: PhD Zygmunt Domadała, Division of Anatomy, Ultrasound Anatomy Lablatory

Topic of the project: Ultrasound anatomy of the vocal folds in health and in disease.

Short description of the project:

As a result of improvements in ultrasound image quality, it has become possible to assess structures that were previously impossible to visualise. The larynx is such an organ. The anatomy of the larynx is known and standard examination techniques are known. The authors of the project wonder whether it is possible to perform ultrasound analysis of the vocal folds in order to use this device for screening of the larynx in people at increased risk of cancer of this organ.
The first step of the project is to define a normogram of vocal fold function in both sexes observed in vivo by ultrasonography using Doppler techniques. So far, no normograms for a healthy population have been defined on a sufficiently large group of volunteers. The first stage of the study would be to carry out such an evaluation. The next stage would be to examine a group at increased risk of laryngeal cancer. It is worth emphasising that as a result of ageing of the larynx, the usefulness of this method is limited in men. In men, laryngeal calcification occurs. In women this process is much slower and gives a chance for the success of the projectThe project is broken down into several milestones. If any milestone fails, it will be possible to complete it earlier.

Stage 1 - Assessment of available literature and definition of minimum hardware requirements

Stage 2 - conducting a pilot project based on 50 representatives of both sexes

Stage 3 - evaluating the results of the pilot project, planning a full project to determine the norm of vocal fold vibration in young healthy adults assessed with a Doppler effect ultrasound head

Step 4 - creation of a normogram based on statistical analysis

Stage 5 - conducting a pilot project on a group of 50 people at high risk of developing laryngeal cancer

Stage 6 - planning a large research project and its implementation

Step 7 - final statistical analysis and completion of the projectIf all stages of the project are carried out it is planned to prepare 2-3 scientific publications. They will be the project settlement.

Offer requirement: We are looking for scientists interested in scientific development in morphological sciences or and interested in ultrasound anatomy. Good to know: knowledge of basic ultrasonography.

If you are interested in developing such a proposal with us, email your CV as early as possible and latest by March 21, 2021. Questions and applications plase sent to a specific supervisor and any general questions regarding this opportunity to: maria.wolkowinska@umed.wroc.pl
