OFFER DESCRIPTION

Location: Institute of Cell Biology and Immunology, University of Stuttgart, Germany

Group Leader: Dr. Andrew G. Clark

Availability/Duration: from 1 June 2021, funding for 3-4 years

The Clark lab is seeking highly-motivated candidates for a PhD position (E13/65%, full time equivalent) at the Institute of Cell Biology and Immunology (IZI) at the University of Stuttgart, in association with the Stuttgart Research Center for Systems Biology (SRCSB) and the Center for Personalized Medicine (ZPM) at the University of Tübingen.

The Clark lab is a new research team at the University of Stuttgart working on the cell biology of the intestine and intestinal cancer. Our group combines high resolution live cell imaging, quantitative analysis and biophysics to better understand intestinal cell function and dynamics and to explore the role of cell and tissue mechanics in intestinal homeostasis and disease. In addition, we are also interested in understanding how aspects of cell differentiation, metabolism and interactions with the microbiome and immune system affect intestinal function. These studies involve the use of state-of-the-art culturing techniques for intestinal organoids and mouse models to understand how individual cell function contributes to overall tissue health and disease.

As part of this PhD position, the successful applicant will undertake a project exploring fundamental aspects of cell dynamics and turnover using primarily intestinal organoids and quantitative live cell microscopy. An experimental background in cell biology or biophysics is required. Experience working with mouse models is highly advantageous. The applicant should be self-motivated and able to independently develop and execute project-related aims. Good communication skills are required. The working language is English.

The University of Stuttgart is one of the leading technical universities in Germany and offers an inclusive and family-friendly environment. The Institute of Cell Biology and Immunology provides state-of-the-art equipment and the chance to work in an interdisciplinary and highly collaborative environment. The institute also is a key pillar for cellular analytics and biophotonics within the Stuttgart Research Center Systems Biology, one of the largest German inter-faculty infrastructures for systems biological research that brings together experimental and theoretical groups.

The Clark lab and the University of Stuttgart are committed to providing an inclusive working environment regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. We especially welcome applications from individuals from historically under-represented groups.

Candidates should send a full CV including a list of publications, motivation letter with a description of previous research and at least 2 letters of recommendation to clark.lab.stuttgart@gmail.com no later than Friday, 21 May 2021.
